Learning About Proxie Servers

If you are one of those people who love to protect and preserve your privacy then you should seriously consider getting a proxy server for yourself. Every website which is visible on the internet is hosted on computers which are known as servers and a proxy is actually a server which acts as the middleman between the client and other servers.

When you are accessing or visiting a website or a service that is hosted on an external network like the World Wide Web or an internal one which is local then your computer or terminal will be communicating directly with that server on which the service or webpage is hosted. Because a proxy performs the function of an intermediary between the two ends it is an extremely important network component.

Having a proxy server means your computer will not be directly communicating with the server that is hosting the web pages that you want to see, but your communications will go through another computer, i.e. the proxy. Therefore the proxy server communicates with the host server on your behalf and obtains the requested information. Once that is done, the proxy server would route the information back to you.

This would make it seem like a much slower process which people would not like to use, but having a proxy server can actually be very beneficial for you in spite of this concept having a bad reputation of facilitating unsavory and illegal activities. Earlier proxy servers were actually designed for the purpose of masking the identity of computers belonging to internal networks.

Not only does it protect the computer from prying eyes but also helps to increase the speed of certain web resources and network by means of caching. Caching is imperative because it serves as a content filter and scans inbound as well as outbound data for potential leaks and viruses. Over the past few years there has been a tremendous increase in the number of people using proxy servers because people are becoming more and more net-savvy.

By using proxy servers in schools and at workplaces, the concept of content filtration would prevail which is quite useful for keeping the students and employees from going to ‘questionable websites’ and viewing forbidden videos or from engaging in ‘non-productive’ activities like connecting with their friends on social networking sites or from playing online games. Thus it is understandable as to why people would want to use proxy servers for professional settings.

Another reason as to why people choose to use proxy servers is to remain anonymous on the Internet. In this way they can protect their identity by masking the Internet Protocol or IP addresses of their computers. One can also communicate through numerous proxies or identities if the scope of work so demands.

If you haven’t yet used a proxy server then it is high time you consider using one because you will be able to hide your IP, which is an unchangeable and unique piece of information that can be used by cyber criminals for the purpose of accessing your data.
